Happiness – Create Your Own
“Happy” according to Dictionary.com, is “characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy.” Among the various definitions in Merriam Webster: “effective, or well adapted; enjoying or characterized by well-being and contentment.” “Happy” has been in the English lexicon since the 14th century, and describes a feeling most of us wish to experience every day. For some it’s surprisingly easy to achieve, for others, happiness is more elusive, here are a few tips that might be helpful:
Love yourself for who you are. Stop focusing on your “flaws” and embrace who you are now. This doesn’t mean you can’t work towards improvement. But it does mean you must stop beating yourself up for being less-than-perfect.
Don’t expect others to make you happy. Relationships are an integral part of the human experience. However, if you expect others, whether friends or family, to fill a void in your life or make you feel a certain way — happiness will be elusive.
Open your heart to change. Life changes constantly. The more you accept change, make peace with it and embrace it, the happier you will be. This includes external changes over which you have no control as well as internal changes you’re prompted to make within yourself.
Live in the present. While remembering the past can be comforting, and dreaming about the future can be exciting, real life happens in the present. If you want to be happier, focus on making the most of every moment.
Create your own solutions. Even the happiest life isn’t without challenges. But happy people know they have the internal strength and knowledge necessary to handle them. Be confident in your own abilities; create your own solutions.
To achieve real happiness, love yourself for who you are now, not who you wish to be; create your own happiness, don’t expect others to do it for you; accept life’s challenges and embrace change knowing you have the strength and knowledge to create your own solutions.
